Multisport World Championships in Spain

Islanders have strong results at World Championship

The road to the Multisport World Championships in Pontevedra, Spain began in Summerside last August for six Island athletes. By finishing first in their respective age group at the TriLobster Duathlon, the six qualified to compete in the Duathlon World Championships in 2019.

The International Triathlon Union World Multisport Championships attracted close to 4000 athletes from 52 countries around the world. Team Canada was comprised of 145 athletes, with 82 of them competing in Duathlon. The Sprint Duathlon consists of a 5K run, 20K bike, and 2.5K run, while the Standard Duathlon is comprised of a 10K run, 40K bike, and 5K run.

Dan McCarthy stated, “It was an incredible experience to be a member of the Canadian Team representing your country and competing with people from all over the world! I am hooked and I am training very hard to qualify at Trilobster this summer for the 2020 Worlds in Almere, Netherlands”.

Five of the athletes competed in the Sprint Duathlon at the World Championships:

  1. Mitchell Stewart was top Canadian and 22nd overall in the 25-29 age group in 1:07:41.
  2. Gerald Gallant was top Canadian and 38th overall in the 35-39 age group in 1:13:02.
  3. Anthony Landry was second Canadian and 39th overall, in  1:13:39.
  4. Dan McCarthy, was second Canadian and 16th overall in the 65-69 age group in 1:18:21.
  5. Doris Landry was top Canadian and placed eighth overall in the 65-69 age group in 1:40:23.

In the Standard Duathlon, Bruno Marchand was the top Canadian and placed 19th overall  in  2:17:19.

Triathlon PEI is seeing increasing participation in its triathlon and duathlon events and look forward to a great summer race series. The next event is the Subaru of Charlottetown China Point Duathlon June 2nd.
